This is an ancient path that goes from Barcelona to Montserrat, heavily used by the pilgrims to the Holy Mountain.
The oldest documented information dates back to the year 1342, which speaks of certain reforms that the king Pedro el Ceremonioso made to the stretch paved of El Hostal de la Creu de la Guardiola.
The existence of an ancient map is also known with its route and that a map in the Property Register Geographic Institute, sheet 392, indicates its itinerary.
In 1994m the Terrassa Hiking Centre published a guide to the PR-C 32 to complete the magnificent work carried out by a team of hikers from El Valles who devoted their time to searching for and recovering it, within the possibilities of the orography of the route.
Subsequently, this path that is signposted as PR-C 32 due to its long length, became a GR path under its current name: GR 96.
