The origin of the monastery is Cistercian, its construction went on from the 12th century until the 14th century.Out of the set of medieval buildings those preserved include the Church, the Cloister, the Chapter House, the punishment Cells, the Parlour, and the Kitchen.Improvements were made during the 16th and 17th centuries. The monastery was abandoned by the monks after the sale of church lands of Mendizábal, and the ownership of the Monastery passed to the State. In 1942, the Príncipe de Viana Foundation started major reconstruction. The religious community of the Clérigos Regulares (Teatinos) was established here, continuing in the Monastery right up until today.
