Ciudad Real

It has a remarkable architectural heritage, with attractive religious buildings, mansions, and palaces that date from the 16th and 17th centuries. The most representative religious building in Villanueva de los Infantes is the parish church of San Andrés, which dates from the 16th century, in whose interior we find interesting chapels, such as the chapel of Bustos, where Quevedo was buried, the chapel of the Knights of Saint James, the chapel of Santísimo, and a crypt devoted to Saint Thomas. Also worth a visit are the hospital of Remedio, from the 17th century; the 16th-century alhóndiga (corn exchange), which was for a while the House of Trade, and later was turned into a jail; the house of Arco, from the 17th century; the house of Estudios, or Lower College, from the 16th century; the ancestral home of Saint Thomas of Villanueva, the oratory, and the portico of the House of the Inquisition. We should also mention the church of the convent of Santo Domingo, the church of Dominicas de la Encarnación, and the church-convent of the Franciscan Nuns. Among the mansions and palaces, we must highlight the barracks of the Knights of St. James; the house of the Marquis of Melgarejo, from the 17th century, which exhibits paintings by Carreño and Juan de Juanes; and the palace of Bustos, from the 16th century.
