Church of Santa María la Real, Sangüesa
Church of San Salvador
This town in Navarre has many buildings in Medieval style.
Sangüesa is in the middle area of the Region of Aragon, on the banks of the Aragon River. This historic town is 44 kilometres from Pamplona, the regional capital, and is outstanding for its medieval historic-artistic heritage. In the Middle Ages, Sangüesa lived a period of splendour, partly because it was an important stopping place for pilgrims on the Way of St. James. Its streets bring back the past, with many religious and civil buildings from that period: palaces, churches, shrines, monasteries...
It is well worth exploring the surrounding area. Only a few kilometres away you will find outstanding monuments such as Javier Castle and San Salvador de Leire Monastery, along with stunning landscapes: the Lumbier and Arbayún gorges, and the Roncal and Salazar valleys, in the Pyrenees. Before you leave Sangüesa, be sure to admire the local crafts and sample its delicious gastronomy, with a wealth of vegetables and pulses, red meats, cheese, wild mushrooms, game and fish.
