Wineyards in Laguardia, Álava.
It is located in northern Spain, in the south of the Basque Country, and is the most extensive province in the Basque region. The capital is the city of Vitoria, which is also the regional capital. This is the site of the Gothic cathedral of Santa María de Vitoria, a must for visitors, and particularly now that that the building can be seen while the restoration works are actually taking place. The popular festivities of the "Virgen Blanca", or the "White Virgin" take place in August. The province is famous for its gastronomic culture. Its towns and cities are the perfect places for enjoying the typical "pintxos" canapés with an assortment of delicious toppings), or for taking part in its food festivals. Part of the Rioja wine-producing area lies in the southern part of the province, and offers a famous Wine Route. The territory of Álava, with four nature reserves and several reservoirs, has some outstanding natural resources. This is an excellent place for outdoor sports.
