Every year, the festivities in Logroño in honour of the city's patron saint commemorate the victory over the French troops under the command of André de Foix, lord of Asparrot and Count of Foix.
This event lies somewhere between myth and reality. According to tradition, the inhabitants of Logroño managed to survive by drinking wine from the wine cellars and eating bread made with wheat from the granaries and the fish they caught in secret. For this reason, the festivities include a series of rituals which recall these happenings: in one particular procession, the mayor waves the flag in the places where the gates to the city formerly stood; the cannons fire their salutes, and bread, wine and fish are eaten at the Revellín gate, which was built in the 16th century to mark the victory.
