Scouring the forest in search of wild mushrooms, enjoying the pleasures of Spain's gastronomic festivals, visiting food-themed museums... and even the chance to form part of a culinary team led by one of Spain's top chefs! Come and savour life to the full.

Gastronomic routes

Olive oil, kid, lamb, Iberian cured ham, ground red pepper, goat's cheese… All these delicious products are typical of Extremadura . If you want to find out the best places to enjoy them, you can take any one of the 13 Gastronomic Routes in Extremadura. Because there's nothing like arriving somewhere and being sure you're going to be able to sample the very best.

And what is the jewel in the crown? Iberian cured ham. To enjoy it as it deserves, there are two specific routes: the Montánchez Route and the Route of the Sierras de Badajoz. In fact in the Sierra de Montánchez y Tamuja district you can reserve a guided visit to the typical wooded pasture known as the 'dehesa' or to a drying plant, and restore your strength with some dishes based on Iberian cured pork products. Delicious!

Gastronomic festivals and markets

Get together with friends and family to share and savour the gastronomic festivals of Extremadura. There are numerous events throughout the year, including the Chanfaina in Fuente de Cantos (last Sunday in April), the Cheese Fair in Trujillo (first weekend in May), the Cured Ham Fair in Jerez de los Caballeros (May), the Tench Festival in the villages of Tajo-Salor (last Saturday in August), Cured Ham Day in Monesterio (6 September)…And what about a visit to a street market? We recommend the market which takes place the first Tuesday in August in Plasencia . You'll find top-quality products against a backdrop of music and drummers and popular songs!
