Following in Goya’s footsteps in Aragón

Francisco de Goya is one of the great masters of painting. He was ahead of his time, a brilliant, sensitive artist. Here we invite you to discover his works in Aragón, northeastern Spain, the Region that saw his birth and his beginnings as an artist.

Some of the most important figures in the history of painting have come from Spain. Goya is one of these. His extensive oeuvre constitutes a vivid reflection of the society and events of his time. Discovering it is to go on a cultural journey that will take you to his birthplace, the Region of Aragón. Here you can follow in the artistic footsteps of the brilliant painter, visiting the museums and monuments in various towns. Are you ready to enjoy the magic of his brushstrokes? Then let’s begin.

Goya-esque Zaragoza

The route starts in Zaragoza, 320 kilometres from the Spanish capital, Madrid. You can get there in barely 90 minutes, thanks to the High Speed Train (AVE) service between the cities. You will find Goya in many places around the city. To start with, in the frescos of El Pilar Basilica, 28 metres overhead. You can see his work on the vaulted ceiling, the dome and the four dome supports. The Cartuja de Aula Dei is another building with work by the master. In 1774, he created a series of eleven mural paintings in this monastery, seven of which remain today. Take note: you can see them on the last Saturday of every month, by prior appointment by telephone.

The journey continues in the Camón Aznar Museum, which has one of the most complete collections of etchings by Goya: the The Whims and The Disasters of War series of drawings show the artist’s historic vision and feelings. The next stops are the Zaragoza Museum, the La Infanta Patio and the Archbishop’s Palace, which also contains outstanding works by the painter. Feeling Goya

Goya’s presence can also be felt in the surrounding villages, less than 50 kilometres from Zaragoza. For example, in Fuendetodos, where you will find his Birth House and Etching Museum, which has a permanent exhibition of The Whims, The Disasters, The Bullfight and The Follies. There is still more to see. In Calatayud the main dome of San Juan el Real Church awaits. Alagón, Muel, Remolinos and Pedrosa are other towns with pieces by this great artist. Finally, we would recommend a visit to Huesca, 72 kilometres from Zaragoza, and its Museum. There you can see several of Goya’s portraits and a series of four lithographs of The Bulls of Bordeaux.
