Sevilla

Walking around Seville, in Andalusia, is one of the most wonderful experiences to be had in southern Spain. Here you will find a magical city, more beautiful and restored than ever. If you also take a stroll amidst the flowers, fountains and the characteristic scent of orange blossom in the historic gardens of one of the city’s most emblematic monuments, the Real Alcázar Palace, then the plan is unbeatable.

One of the things about Spain that could make your trip here perfect, is that it is home to some of Europe’s oldest gardens. Of these some of the most special are the gardens at the Real Alcázar Palace in Seville, located in the heart of the city, with the UNESCO World Heritage designation. Here are a few reasons not to miss them:

-Before entering the gardens you will have the privilege of looking around the rooms of Seville’s Real Alcázar, an ensemble of palaces with more than 1,000 years of history, one of the city’s most visited monuments. Explore its patios and lounges, admire its tapestries and variety of artistic styles: Moorish, Renaissance, Baroque, Neo-classical…

-Although you will have seen the beauty of the gardens from the palace balconies, make sure you go outside and take a walk through them. They are unique, and reflect the passing of various historical periods. Which will be your favourite? The Cross Garden, the 12th-century Garden or the Moorish Garden? Perhaps those considered to be more modern, such as the English Garden, the Poets’ garden or the Marquis of Vega-Inclán Garden? In all of them you will be free to feel, to take photos, to imagine… Leave your hurries behind and contemplate palm trees, cypresses, pomegranate trees, orange trees, oaks…

-Besides 170 plant species to be found in 60,000 square metres of gardens, you can also enjoy the Grutesco Gallery (a real viewpoint over the gardens), ponds, sculptures, colourful tiles, canals and fountains such as the Neptune Fountain in the Ladies’ Garden.

-Spanish kings such as Alfonso X, Peter I or Charles V have walked through this place, and you can find out about the legends that accompany each garden. Did you know that the Prince’s Garden got its name when Catholic Queen Isabella gave birth to Prince John in a room whose window overlooked this garden? The Diners Garden, meanwhile, is home to the Pavilion of Charles V, where the Spanish Emperor used to have dinner in the summer.

-Don’t miss the season of concerts held in the gardens on summer nights. You will hear the best music under the stars. Furthermore, in the coming months there will be exhibitions held at the Real Alcázar dedicated to the bi-centenary of the Spanish War of Independence, to Easter week and to climate change.

A thousand ways to discover Seville

Besides the Real Alcázar, the Andalusian capital has many parks and gardens that will show you a truly beautiful side of the city. The most famous of these include those at Casa de Pilatos House, Las Delicias Gardens and especially the gardens of María Luisa Park, Seville’s main city park, located alongside Plaza de España Square. You can visit it in a horse-drawn carriage.

Seville has special charm and unique monuments. For example, close to the Real Alcázar you will find the Cathedral with its Giralda Tower. Not to be missed either is the city’s emblematic Guadalquivir River. You can take a boat trip along it and get a great view of Torre del Oro Tower and the Triana neighbourhood, famous for its tapas bars.

Keep aside several hours and check opening times to discover Seville’s spectacular gardens. You will find all the information you need at the tourist office. Get carried away by the unique beauty and wonderful weather in this Andalusian city.
