Unique proposals for your trip to Granada

Alpujarra. Photo courtesy of the Granada Tourist Board

A visit to La Alhambra and El Generalife or the Sierra Nevada Mountains is a must in any plan for a trip to Granada. In addition to these “must-sees,” here are some unique ideas to make the trip more special. Would you like to spend time in a Buddhist retreat, see Granada from the air or sleep in a cave? Carry on reading.…

A Buddhist centre at 1,600 metres above sea level: the Osel Ling Buddhist Retreat Centre lies in the Alpujarra region (a little more than one hour from the city of Granada). This intriguing place is directed by a Spanish Buddhist nun and around 10 people live there. From the vantage point of this old country estate you can see the peak of Mulhacén and the white towns of the Poquiera canyon: Capileira, Pampaneira and Bubión. This experience is recommended above all if you need to get away from stress.

Granada flyover: The best way to see this southern area of Spain from another point of view is to sign up for a tourist flight. There are three routes to choose from: Monumental Granada, Tropical Coast and Deserts of Guadix. You will fly in the latest model planes with expert pilots. It’s something you have to experience.

Sleep in a cave: subterranean architecture is traditional in the Granada area. Many of its historic caves are inhabited today as full service tourist accommodations and can be found mostly in the Gaudix and El Marquesadi and Baza Huéscary regions, and in the Sacromonte neighbourhood of the city of Granada. Picture yourself there!

Natural wonders: Granada holds hundred-year-old trees that deserve a visit to discover the history that they are hiding. There is the ginkgo biloba in the Granada Botanical Gardens, the cypress in the Generalife Acequia Patio, the Carmen of the Martyrs cypress, the laurel at the Mercedarian monk residence in La Zubia, and the sequoias in the La Losa estate in Huéscar. Any trip to Granada also must include a visit to one of its Carmens. These are small traditional houses in the Albaicín neighbourhood with beautiful gardens and orchards. The scent that the roses and jasmine give off is a true wonder. Some of the Carmens that can be visited are the Carmen de la Victoria (Granada University) and the Carmen de Max Moreau (Granada City Council).

Moorish baths: the “hamman”, or Moorish baths, are another amazing incentive to travel to Granada. The baths preserve the ancient decorative splendour of Al-Andalus, and a bath in any one of them is a most relaxing experience.

Live a different Granada. Make your trip unique.
