The new Cathedral.

The Gothic church of San Juan was recently completed and given the status of cathedral.

The cathedral is built on the site of the old church of San Juan. It was started at the beginning of the 16th century. Later, part was remodelled by Diego de Siloé in Renaissance style. However, it is recently that works have been concluded, as can be seen from the main doorway, which is in modern style. Inside there are beautiful, interesting old altarpieces, such as that of the Virgen de los Llanos chapel, 16th-century, work of the “Maestro de Albacete”. It has excellent chapels in Gothic style with vaulted ceilings and star-shaped skylights. Special mention should be made of the Renaissance baptismal font in the sacristy. The vaulted ceiling of the central nave is Baroque and is set over fluted Ionic columns built by Gregorio Díaz Palacios.
