The history of the Paseo del Espolón in Burgos is very similar to that of any of the main promenades in any Spanish city. Its layout has followed the governing vagaries of fashion and various gardening styles. However, the Espolón has been able to maintain its integrity and become the most representative garden in the city and the prototype for the numerous promenades in many Castilian cities. It is in the centre of the city, between the San Pablo and Santa María bridges, on the banks of the River Arlanzón.
