Introduction

Visit the largest wine-producing area in the Canary Islands. A land of sun, volcanic earth and sea, where you can sample the wines bearing the Tacoronte–Acentejo and Valle de La Orotava Designation of Origin label. The vineyards are located in Tenerife between 100 and 1000 metres above sea level. On your way along this route you can discover the island’s cultural and historic heritage and its natural and scenic diversity, as well as sampling the typical Canarian cuisine.

Wine towns

Tacoronte, the starting point, Tegueste, El Sauzal, San Cristóbal de la Laguna and La Orotava are some of the towns that you’ll find on your route. Along the way you’ll have the chance to visit everything from large vineyards to smaller family-run businesses; from those which still use the more traditional wine-making methods to those which are equipped with the latest technology. What will I find in the region?

The region has a wide range of beaches: these include the Prix, the Rincón and the Arena. All these beaches offer the chance to enjoy the sun and to practice water sports.

Visit the stately homes and the historic centre of San Cristóbal de la Laguna, which has been declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO.

Discover the cultural and historic heritage of Tenerife, with a tour of the various sights in the area: the church of San Pedro Apóstol (El Sauzal), and the Monument to Canarian Wrestling (Tegueste) are just a couple of interesting examples.

Go on an excursion to discover the Teide National Park, declared a World Heritage site by the UNESCO.

Enjoy a round of golf in the Real Club de Tenerife in Tacoronte, or explore the region by walking its network of footpaths.

The numerous local festivities that you can enjoy include the traditional Religious Procession of San Benito Abad. This is a festival of interest to tourists which is held in San Cristóbal de la Laguna every year in July.

What are the wines like?

Produced with natural ingredients in an area of volcanic soil located by the sea in a varied and stable climate. The Tacoronte–Acentejo Designation of Origin comprises mostly red wines. These wines are young and fresh-tasting with new and fruity aromas. On the palate they are fragrant, potent and very resonant. The whites, on the other hand, have an intense, fruity aroma and are harmonious and balanced on the palate. They are made mainly from the Listán Blanco, Malvasía, Gual, Moscatel and Verdello varieties.

How to get there

The Tacoronte-Acentejo Wine Route is located in the northern part of Tenerife. You can reach the island by either of its international airports: the Tenerife Norte airport, which is 13 kilometres from the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife; or by the Reina Sofía airport, 60 kilometres to the south of the capital. Another option is to arrive via the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, located in the capital itself.
Once you are in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, it will take you about 15 minutes to reach Tacoronte on the Autopista del Norte TF-5 motorway in the direction of Santa Cruz-Icod (exit 19). You can use this same motorway to turn off towards all the different places on the route.
