This is also where another universally renowned drink is produced: Cava (sparkling wine). Wine Towns

Sant Sadurní d’Anoia and Vilafranca del Penedès are the most outstanding towns on the route. For centuries, wine has marked the history and economy of this region of Catalonia. Amongst vineyards and wineries you will find villages, farms and neighbourhoods of medieval origin. The different civilisations that have inhabited this area over the ages can now be seen in its important artistic heritage, well worth getting to know. What will I find in the region?

Romanesque art: the Sant Sebastià del Gorgs monastery, emblematic of Romanesque architecture in the Penedès region, is of special interest, along with Gelida and Castellet castles and the monuments to be found in Olèrdola.

Castles Route: a guided tour will help you discover the region's most important castles.

Modernism, especially in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, Vilafranca del Penedès and Gelida, with guided tours in the three towns. One of the most outstanding examples is the Cavas Codorníu building, the work of architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch.

What are the wines like?

Wines from the Penedès region are produced from traditional grape varieties, but also with others that have been introduced in recent years. They are mainly young wines with excellent bouquet. The whites are generally very fruity and crisp. The reds are full-bodied, aromatic, with intense colour. Special mention should be made of cava, a naturally-produced sparkling wine. It has an unmistakable flavour. Cava is the wine chosen for special toasts and celebrations, for private, magical moments... Sant Sadurní d’Anoia is the world capital for this product.

How to get there

The Penedès region is in Catalonia, northeastern Spain, between the provinces of Barcelona and Tarragona. There are various means of transport available to get to there. The airports in Barcelona and Reus are the closest to Vilafranca del Penedés and Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, the main towns on this wine route. There are also numerous daily rail services that run between this wine-producing region and Barcelona and Tarragona. Furthermore, the AP-7 toll motorway runs between the Penedès region and the two aforementioned cities. The journey takes less than an hour. The AP-7 motorway also links the region with France.
