In Andalusia, the GR7 long-distance path, the E-4 European path, begins in the municipality of Tarifa in the province of Cadiz.
It connects villages from the provinces of Cadiz, Malaga, Granada, Almería, Cordoba and Jaen, with approximately 1250 km of signposted paths.
It runs along the sierra of Ojén, with its great botanical and landscape value, before continuing through the Los Alcornocales Natural Park, with great contrasts of fluvial valleys and plenty of mountain formations upon which one of the most extensive cork oak groves in the world grows. It then crosses the Grazalema Natural Park, noteworthy for its Spanish fir grove, caves and gorges.
It enters the province of Malaga in Los Llanos de Libar and Montejaque. It runs through such interesting places as La Serranía de Ronda, El Chorro, climbers' paradise, and the Sierra del Valle de Abdalajís, until reaching Antequera.
In Villanueva de Cauche it divides into two main offshoots: one heading towards Zafarraya to enter the province of Granada and the other towards the province of Cordoba, after crossing the north-eastern region of Malaga.
In the province of Granada it runs through Alhama de Granada, set among enormous strips of rock that form real natural walls. It enters the wonderful valley of Lecrín, with its many orange trees and streams, before continuing through La Alpujarra of Granada and a small stretch (Puerto de la Ragua-Bayárcal) of La Alpujarra in Almeria, all exceptionally beautiful with villages containing local architecture, crafts and cuisine, etc.
Part of the path runs through the mountainous massif of Sierra Nevada, one of the natural areas of greatest diversity in Andalusia and declared and National Park in 1999.
After re-entering the province of Granada, you will cross the Sierra de Baza. You pass through the localities of Zújar (spa baths) and Orce (prehistoric findings) and, after the beautiful views of the Pico de la Sagra peak (2,000 m), reach Puebla de Don Fadrique.
If you take the Cordoba offshoot, the path runs entirely through the Natural Park of Las Sierras Subbéticas, located in the south of Cordoba, the geographic centre of Andalusia of great landscape and ecological wealth. You pass through the locality of Rute, where a visit to the anisette museum and a taste of the sweets is a must, through Priego de Córdoba, a jewel of Cordoba baroque, and through Almenidilla, with the remains of an important Roman villa and an Iberian necropolis. It finally enters the province of Jaen through La Hortichuela.
It crosses the Sierra Mágina Natural Park, with a rugged landscape representing the highest area of the province, followed by the Natural Park of Las Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas, the most extensive in Andalusia with extremely beautiful valleys and the source of the River Guadalquivir. After reaching Santiago de la Espada, it enters the province of Granada to connect with the offshoot of the Granada GR7 in Puebla de Don Fadrique before entering the Autonomous Community of Murcia.
