Beaches and sport in a village with history
Several prehistoric funereal monuments show that Platja d'Aro was an important settlement in the most distant times. There is also evidence of Roman presence in the village, from the Plá de Palol archaeological site. The roots of present day Platja d'Aro go back to the Middle Ages, centring on Santa María Church (11th century), at a time when work began on the construction of Benedormiens Castle, the origin of Castell d'Aro. Little remains of the old fortress, which was destroyed in the 19th century. You can also go on outings in the nearby mountains, with routes to the Font del Ferro and Font de la Boixa springs, Mas Daussá, a farmstead built between the 16th and 17th centuries, and Rocas Martinas, a beautiful viewpoint that looks out over the Costa Brava coastline. Of course, you can also enjoy the small coves and long, sandy beaches where water sports are available.
