Discovering the Region of Madrid

Monasterio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial

Madrid has much to offer visitors: culture, art, leisure… and much more, even outside the big city. Here we suggest four destinations less than 50 kilometres from the city of Madrid where you can see for yourself. They are Alcalá de Henares, Aranjuez, Chinchón and San Lorenzo de El Escorial - four places you will love.

On this trip you will be able to discover: history and culture in the streets of Alcalá de Henares, 30 kilometres from Madrid; 50 kilometres to the south of the city, a landscape with the UNESCO World Heritage designation, in Aranjuez; also 50 kilometres away, but to the southeast, one of the Region's most unusual villages, Chinchón; the same distance to the northwest, a city of kings, San Lorenzo de El Escorial. Come and discover them.

Alcalá de Henares, culture

Alcalá de Henares is a World Heritage City and a major cultural destination. Miguel de Cervantes, author of "Don Quixote" was born here, and it is also home to one of Europe's oldest universities, the Complutense.

On your trip you can visit historic San Idelfonso College, the University headquarters, and the city's historic centre - they both have the UNESCO World Heritage designation. The city wall, more than 400 years old, the Archbishop's Palace, the Cathedral, Renaissance and Baroque palaces of the University, the Miguel de Cervantes House-Museum… all these are not to be missed on your visit.

Aranjuez, a privilege

Stroll around a privileged site with huge gardens and a magnificent Royal Palace - this is possible in Aranjuez. The city's cultural landscape is designated World Heritage by UNESCO.

A good idea is to get there on the Strawberry Train, a historic, fun train that runs between Madrid and Aranjuez. In fact, strawberries are a typical product of Aranjuez, which is also outstanding for its asparagus and game.

Chinchón, unique character

Chinchón is one of the most picturesque villages in the Region of Madrid. It is especially charming on account of its cobbled streets and medieval square: Plaza Mayor de Chinchón, with more than 200 wooden balconies that act as boxes for many a celebration. These include the famous village bullfights.

Madrid is just a few minutes from places which have an extensive cultural and natural heritage such as Aranjuez (which can be reached on the Strawberry Train), Chinchón (famous for its 15th-century square) and Toledo, a World Heritage Site.

The village is also famous for its delicious gastronomy, especially sweets from the Clarisas Convent and "ajo blanco" (cold soup made with almonds). Chinchón anisette is internationally famous and deserves special mention.

San Lorenzo de El Escorial, an architectural wonder

In San Lorenzo de El Escorial you will find an ensemble of monuments that include the Casa de Oficios, Príncipe and Infante Houses and the stunning El Escorial Monastery, which has the UNESCO World Heritage designation along with its surroundings.

In San Lorenzo de El Escorial you will find an ensemble of monuments that include the Casa de Oficios, Príncipe and Infante Houses and the stunning El Escorial Monastery, which has the UNESCO World Heritage designation along with its surroundings.

San Lorenzo de El Escorial is one of the most visited destinations in the Region. You will be pleasantly surprised by its attractive, varied cultural agenda throughout the year, with many exhibitions, concerts, etc.

Magnificent palaces, UNESCO World Heritage sites, excellent gastronomy, fairy-tale gardens... this is what you will find in the area around Madrid. Next time you come to the capital, set aside a few days to get to know the surrounding area. There are organised outings, or if you prefer, take your own car or travel by train - these places have excellent communications with the city of Madrid.
