Caldera de Taburiente National Park

Beschrijving

A Canary Islands landscape with character

A number of streams criss-cross the palm-studded landscape of Caldera de Taburiente.

The most attractive feature of this National Park is its rugged landscape, the result of the dramatic difference in height. It is criss-crossed by numerous streams and waterfalls, and also has a significant presence of endemic plant species, including large expanses of Canary Island pines all over the park. Caldera de Taburiente is an immense crater surrounded by the highest peaks on the island: El Roque de los Muchachos (2,426 m), Pico de la Cruz (2,351 m), Piedra Llana (2,321 m), Pico de la Nieve (2,236 m), and Punta de los Roques (2,085 m), among others. From here, the terrain drops steeply into the crater in almost vertical cliff faces over 800 m high until a height of 430 m above sea level, with a difference in altitude of around 2,000 metres.

Culturele informatie

The National Park has a Visitor Centre outside the park boundaries, on the LP-3 road leading from Santa Cruz de La Palma to El Paso. The centre houses a permanent exhibition on the flora, fauna, geology and history of the park.

Milieu-informatie

It is an enormous cirque with a diameter of eight kilometres and a difference in altitude of about 2,000 metres. It has the appearance of a crater due to its volcanic eruptions, landslides and the action of the water. Like the rest of the Canary Islands, the island of La Palma emerged from the bottom of the ocean as a result of several volcanic eruptions. The park contains excellent examples of geological formations and the most ancient lava flows on the island.

Bezoekinformatie

The National Park is reached on foot, although cars can go as far as the Los Brecitos viewing point, the Las Angustias gorge and the La Cumbrecita viewing point.
The most recommended access is from the Los Brecitos viewing point on the PR LP 13 trail. There is a convenient 4x4 taxi service to take visitors up to the viewing point. To enter from the Las Anguastias gorge, visitors should leave their vehicle at the car park in La Viña and access La Caldera through the gorge. Finally, access from the La Cumbrecita viewing point is along the PR LP 13.1. This route is more complicated and tends to be closed due to rock slides, making it advisable to check the state of the road first at the Visitor Centre.
