Beschrijving

This sturdy and heavy-looking church, which was part of the town's castle structure, is surprising because of the delicate sculptural work on both its doors.

It was constructed in the 11th-12th centuries in the Romanesque style. It comprises a nave with a triple semicircular apse, which was possibly part of the fortress's defence system - the remains of the medieval castle can be found next to it - and double crypt (last quarter of the 11th century).
The structure and the interior were greatly refurbished in the 16th century. The naves and apses were extended and new star-shaped cross vaults were built.
But the truly outstanding elements are the two magnificent Romanesque doorways (late 12th century), especially the main one. There are seven semicircular archivolts resting on respective capitals with historiated motifs, while the tympanum is dedicated to "Maiestas Domini" and the Tetramorph symbol.
