This path starts in La Jonquera, next to the French border, from where, without excessive slopes, it heads for Besalú, a medieval town famous for its bridge over the river Fluvià, its Romanesque and gothic buildings and its Jewish quarter.The path crosses the GR1 in this town.

The path continues towards Santa Pau, another medieval town with an interesting portico square,enters the Natural Park of the volcanic area of La Garrotxa, one of the most illustrative examples of ancient volcanic activity on the Iberian Peninsula.It is worth remembering that the volcanoes in this area are inactive, although some may become active in the future.The path climbs up to Rupit and then drops down to the Reservoir of Sau. It then passes through Sant Julià de Vilatorta to Seva, on the spurs of the northern slopes of the Montseny, until reaching Aiguafreda, where the path ends and connects to the GR 5.
It has one variant, the GR 2.2, which leaves Rupit and, passing over the cornice of Les Guilleries looking down over the Reservoir of Susqueda, rejoins the GR 2 at the Hostal de la Riba. Its route has a length of 13 km. and does not pass through places with services except at the starting and arrival points.
