The rural area known as Castellar Viejo is a small village perched on top of a hill and completely surrounded by the walls of its Moorish castle.
The Castellar Viejo fortress is preserved in good condition, despite being so ancient. The modest town in which it stands is also one of the few inhabited medieval fortifications today. The urban centre consists of a small group of squares and short, narrow and winding streets, typical of Al-Andalus.
The castle is currently fitted out as a hotel and inn-restaurant. Amongst the town's buildings, the palace of the Marquis of Moscoso and the Almoraima Monastery stand out especially. On a clear day, as well as the surrounding area, Algeciras Bay, the Rock of Gibraltar and the coast of Africa can be seen.
