The monastery was built in the place where a statue of the Virgin was found. Building works on the monastery began in the 14th century and continued until the end of the 17th, explaining the complex nature of the architecture. The cloister is known as the cloister of miracles and it was the centre of monastic life, where processions and celebrations were organised. It was recently restored by landscape gardeners Carmen Añón and Laura Martínez Visca, and has the atmosphere of a medieval oasis with Mudejar influence, adorned with orange and cypress trees. It is divided by four slightly elevated paths. There is an open pavilion in the centre, unique in its synthesis of Islamic and Christian architecture.
