Located in the interior of Spain, in the north of the region of Extremadura. Its capital is the city of Cáceres, whose historic town has been declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. The Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe, also in the province of Cáceres, shares the same distinction.
Cáceres is a favourite place for birdwatchers due to its wealth of natural resources, which include the Monfragüe National Park and a nature reserve. The Jerte valley is also well worth visiting in spring to see the cherry trees in blossom.
The local gastronomy features especially cured meat products and particularly the Iberian ham from the Dehesa de Extremadura. Other typical dishes include the "migas extremeñas" (fried breadcrumbs with chorizo) , "zorongollo" (red pepper and tomato salad) and "cuchifrito" (lamb stew).
