Have you ever been to the Costa de la Luz? This is the stretch of coastline that runs across the provinces of Huelva and Cadiz, in Andalusia. Here you will find stunning beaches and coves. They are the perfect setting to rest, relax and enjoy sun and sand almost all year round. They are also ideal for golf, water sports, fun with family or friends... In this part of southern Spain you will find endless interesting, tempting options. You are sure to want to come back.
The Costa de la Luz is an ideal destination for your holidays. One reason for this is its array of beaches, large and small. Also on account of the good weather, even in winter, and especially for the wide range of leisure options available on this stretch of coastline, washed by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Would you like to hear a few ideas? Here we go.
Doñana, a treasure of nature. Between the provinces of Huelva and Cadiz, alongside famous beaches like Matalascañas, you will find the Doñana National Park, which has the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve designation and is one of Europe's most important protected nature areas. Here you can see thousands of migratory birds that nest here each year. This area is also home to endangered species such as the Iberian lynx and the golden eagle. Along the way you will explore dunes, marshland, lakes, forests of Mediterranean vegetation... this is an outing not to be missed.
You can make the most of the trip to visit Sanlúcar de Barrameda and have a dip on one of the local beaches, such as Bajo de Guía, where the traditionalhorse races are held every August. They are designated Fiesta of International Tourist Interest.
Golf by the sea. Would you like to learn or practise your golf on courses set by the sea? Then don't delay. Come and do it on the Costa de la Luz. This area has world famous facilities, which have even hosted prestigious tournaments such as the Ryder Cup. There are a range of highly varied courses to be found a short distance from each other. For example, in the 20 kilometres between La Línea and Sotogrande, you will find seven different courses. Have you chosen yours yet?
Tarifa, windsurfing Mecca. The beaches of Tarifa, in the province of Cadiz, are the chosen destination for thousands of people from many different countries, who come to do windsurfing and kite surfing. This is the setting for World Championship events, and tends to have a lively atmosphere. You can usually see hundreds of brightly coloured sails and kites flying across the water. Have a stroll along the beaches at Valdevaqueros and Los Lances and enjoy the spectacle. Other sports with a long tradition in the area are scuba diving and underwater fishing, in waters off Chipiona, Chiclana de la Frontera, Puerto de Santa María and the Bay of Bolonia, where you will also find the ruins of the ancient Roman town of Baelo Claudia.
A film-star beach. Allow us to present one of the most original cinemas of all time: La Victoria Beach. It's true. This is the largest beach in the city of Cadiz, and on summer nights it becomes a huge, open-air cinema where films are projected onto an outdoor screen. A great way to finish off a day at the beach.
These are a few of the options available on the Costa de la Luz, but they are not the only ones. The list is almost endless: naturist holidays in Caños de Meca and Zahora; family fun on the beaches of Moguer and Palos de la Frontera; delicious local shellfish and seafood to be tried at any of the region's fishing villages… Where to start?
