Moguer, a town in the region of La Tierra Llana, located on the banks of the Tinto river, is a place deeply involved in the Discovery of America, since it was in the convent of Santa Clara that Christopher Columbus pledged his oath of allegiance to the Catholic Monarchs.
This town was the birthplace of poet and Nobel-Prize-in-Literature-winner Juan Ramón Jiménez, whose house was turned into a museum. It also preserves numerous interesting monuments, such as the castle-fortress, which was originally a Roman villa that the Arabs transformed into a farmstead. The city centre was built around this fortress. From the ancient construction, only two large towers and some wall fronts are still standing. We must also point out the Gothic-Mudejar convent of Santa Clara, declared a National Monument in 1931; and the convent of San Francisco, originally from the 15th century, and rebuilt after the Lisbon earthquake.
