In Santiago de Compostela you will have everything at your finger tips when it’s time to buy a few gifts for family and friends. If you leave Plaza de las Platerías square next to the Cathedral, you will come to the most popular shopping streets in the historic quarter: the Rúa do Franco, Rúa do Villar, Rúa Calderería and Rúa Nova. In this area you can buy typical handicrafts in silver and jet, and of course all kinds of objects related to the Way of Saint James and the Apostle ("botafumeiros" or giant incense burners, scallop shells, walking sticks, hats, cloaks, figurines....).
Other traditional objects are Sargadelos pottery, leather, lace and, last but not least, Galician bagpipes. You’ll also see witches in a lot of the shops. Known as "meigas" in Galicia, these are another original and amusing souvenir. So too the Celtic symbols and amulets.
