Its origins date from 1401, with the merger of six hospitals existing at the time in Barcelona. With the growth of the city in the 19th century, it was decided to raise a new building. The new hospital is one of the most important civil buildings of Catalan Modernism, and was designed and built by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner.
