One of the best conserved Roman roads in Spain
It was built by the Romans two centuries before Christ, primarily to improve communications between the capital of Avila and Mérida. It was used for transit by the Roman armies and to transport metals from the Sierra de Gredos mountain range, and crossed the Sierra de Gredos through the steep Puerto del Pico pass.
Later it served as a cattle migration route and, in spite of its centuries of use, it has come down to us in the present day in a good state of conservation.
