Vizcaya is connected by means of the best motorway network (toll and free) in the whole country, and Bilbao is the communications hub for the north of the Iberian Peninsula.

The A-8 motorway goes to Donostia/San Sebastián and Irún, and from there you can get to Bordeaux and Paris or Toulouse and Montpellier. The A-68, which runs through the Ebro Valley, goes to Barcelona and connects with the A-7, which follows the Mediterranean coastline. The A-68 also goes straight to Burgos, and from there to Madrid, Valladolid and Portugal.

From the Termibus bus station, situated right in the city centre, there are numerous bus companies providing regional, national and international services.

Located some 12 kilometres from the city centre, the Bilbao international airport is considered the air transport hub of the north of the peninsula, and is connected to the main cities in the country, as well as to all major European destinations. The 3247 bus route goes from the airport to the city, ending at the Termibus bus station and stopping in Plaza Moyua square. It runs between 6:20 am and midnight into Bilbao, and between 5:20 am and 10 pm to the airport, with an approximate frequency of 20 minutes.

From the ferry depot at Santurtzi port, ferries travel to Portsmouth in England and back twice a week, with the option of taking your car with you. The port can be reached by city bus from Plaza Jado square, on the C-1 suburban train line, and by road on the A-8 motorway.

Finally, inter-city RENFE trains depart from the Bilbao-Abando station daily to Madrid and Barcelona, and offer connections to Galicia, Asturias, Portugal, the east and Andalusia.
