Sink your teeth into Gijón
Asturias in northern Spain is famous for its exquisite gastronomy. We propose a trip to Gijón, one of its most important cities, to see for yourself the quality of its products. The most entertaining way to do this is by taking the Cider Route and the two other options, entitled Gijón Goloso ('Gijón for the sweet-toothed') and Gijón Gourmet. Get set to taste a range of delicious sweets, experience a memorable dinner, visit typical cider cellars… Gijón's culinary treats are ready and waiting...
The Cider Route
Cider (obtained from the fermentation of the apple must) is the drink par excellence in this area. This route offers a chance to sample it and to learn various curious facts about its production. This is not a set itinerary, but it offers a range of options for you to choose from.
You can visit cider cellars (places where the cider is made) or sample a set menu in a cider bar, where you can see the traditional method of pouring (tipped from a height onto the rim of the glass). Another option is to go to any of the merenderos (typical picnic areas set in large green spaces) or drop into some of the shops (delicatessens, ice cream parlours and confectioners) specialising in cider-based products such as jams, liqueurs, cakes and pastries… Are you feeling peckish?
You can also enjoy a beauty treatment based on apples, and visit places such as the Atlantic Botanical Garden (where you can learn more about apple trees thanks to its collection of Old World fruit tree cultivars). After taking this route you're sure to be able to pour your cider like an expert. And if you happen to be in Gijón in August, don't miss the Natural Cider Festival, with thousands of people all pouring cider in the traditional way at the same time!
Now that you know a little more about the gastronomy of Asturias, here's an idea you won't be able to resist: Gijón Gourmet. This is a set menu offered by some of the best restaurants in the city. You'll be able to try exquisite fresh fish from the Cantabrian Sea, local meat… and all lovingly prepared by classical chefs or young culinary talents. The quality of the raw ingredients and the creative touch are guaranteed.
Now all that's left is dessert. Gijón Goloso offers the chance to try 16 sweet dishes which are the specialities of various establishments throughout the city. Confectioners (the city has over 60), sweet shops and cake and pastry shops await you with delicious treats such as the cake known astarta gijonesa, sweets made from Cabrales cheese and walnuts, apple ice cream…
You'll find information on all these activities at the official tourist website. Who can resist Gijón when it's so delicious?
