Madrid

The historic town and UNESCO World Heritage site of Aranjuez lies just 48 kilometres from Madrid. There’s no better time to visit than in spring: its famous gardens are full of colour and you can also enjoy an entertaining journey on board the Strawberry Train.

The Strawberry Train is an attraction that appeals to young and old alike. If you find yourself in Madrid at this time of year, then take a trip to Aranjuez on this historic train and enjoy a fun-filled day for the whole family. The line, which opened in 1851, was the second to operate in Spain. A ride on the Strawberry Train takes you back to those bygone days. This evocative journey lasts an hour, and you’ll find that time flies by. The train usually runs from May to June and from September to November on Saturdays and Sundays, departing from the Railway Museum in Madrid.

You’ll travel in fine style in an inviting atmosphere, in restored wooden coaches built in the early 20th century. As you take in the scenery along the route you can also enjoy the famous strawberries of Aranjuez, served to you by stewardesses dressed in period costume. When you reach your destination a bus will take you to the historic buildings and monuments of Aranjuez. On your way you’ll pass the main sites of interests in this town, which in the 16th century was the favourite holiday retreat of the Spanish monarchs. The trip also includes a guided tour of the Royal Palace and admission to the Royal Barge Museum, where you can inspect the fine collection of boats and pleasure craft used by the monarchy.

Aranjuez, with its beautiful gardens and monuments, is well worth a visit if you are staying in the Madrid region. And the experience is even more enjoyable in spring thanks to the Strawberry Train.
