Also known as Burgalimar Castle, this is a magnificent example of military Al-Andalus architecture from the time of the caliphate. It has hardly been affected by any modifications or damage to its structure.

The imposing fortified area consists of an uninterrupted wall constructed of tamped earth and mortar, strengthened with fourteen towers on a square floor plan. The profile of the castle offers an uninterrupted succession of battlements, also square.
As indicated on the foundation stone, it was completed in the year 968 by order of the Umayyad caliph Al-Hakam I. The stone or inscription was at the main gate, a horseshoe arch flanked by two cubic towers.
After it passed into Christian hands, the most important modifications were the construction of its high keep and the partition of the interior area, the bailey, by an interior wall divided into two sectors by a circular tower that is now truncated.
