News for the 2013/2014 season in Spain's ski resorts
Port-Ainé ski resort
Sierra Nevada ski resort
Make the most of winter this year to plan a trip to Spain and have fun in its ski resorts. You'll find over thirty distributed around most parts of the country. In fact, Spain is the second most mountainous country in Europe and has some fantastic areas for skiing, including the Pyrenees in the north and Sierra Nevada in the south. You're bound to have heard of them. You'll find downhill and cross-country ski resorts, and even an indoor resort in the area around the city of Madrid.
Every year, the resorts upgrade their facilities to ensure a first-rate service for visitors. This season brings a series of new slopes; areas for snowboard fans; recreational areas featuring dubies, green jumps and sliding modules; freestyle territories for all levels; new ski-pass formats (for example: '4 days in 4 resorts' or '4 hours skiing'), and a whole range of activities that go way beyond skiing. Here are just a few:
Are you looking for one-off experiences? Then take a look at the Sierra Nevada ski resort (this year with new sectors in the Sulayr Snowpark, the longest jump line in Europe) or La Molina (which has remodelled its Alabau Snowpark, home to the largest halfpipe in the Pyrenees).
Après-ski activities for relaxing
After a great day on the slopes, what about something a little more leisurely? Baqueira offers guided tours of the resort, a weekly picnic on the slopes, a Romanesque route through the Arán valley and the chance to pamper yourself in its thermal baths.
Cerler, in its spectacular viewing platform over the Benasque valley, offers both table service and a menu based on Alpine resort gastronomy.
And for maximum relaxation, drop in to the new chillout zone in La Molina or the spa at the Manzaneda ski resort (with jacuzzi, sauna, areas with treatment cabins and outdoor warm-water contrast pool).
Multi-activity in the snow
If sitting around is not your thing, don't worry. In addition to skiing, most resorts in Spain offer a range of other activities such as snow bike excursions, dogsled rides, horse-riding excursions, snowshoe routes…
What's more, in some resorts like Baqueira you'll find paddle tennis courts and covered climbing walls. And what about trying Disco Golf in Cerler?
For anyone in search of different activities, the resorts have come up with a range of ideas: excursions on nights with a full moon and panoramic flights in Baqueira, night skiing in the heart of the Pyrenees at the Masella ski resort, driving in a 4x4 Audi Experience and a new off-road' route in La Molina, and a video competition of skiers' experiences in Panticosa. Sound interesting?
One of the great attractions of Spain is being able to ski in the sun. The experience is so pleasant that most resorts make the most of the sensation. For example in Baqueira, you'll be able to sit out in the sunshine on the terrace of the café while you enjoy your lunch. And in Cerler you can experience 'Sunset Cerler' and enjoy the sunset from one of its most beautiful spots (the Rincón del Cielo), then take a nocturnal run down the slopes illuminated by torches.
Not knowing how to ski is no longer an excuse. In Spain, resorts like Baqueira offer a programme of special activities for people signed up on ski courses (welcome cocktail, end-of-course race…). Others like Espot and Port Ainé offer a 'Beginners' ski-pass and new 'Snow Baptism' packs. You'll love it when you try it.
Espot and Port Ainé, Javalambre, Manzaneda and Sierra Nevada are just a few of the resorts to unveil new zones for the younger members of the family. Supervised play parks with qualified staff, slopes designed for younger skiers, alternative activities, a children's club… You can really relax if you're travelling with the family.
In the internet age, Spain's ski resorts are fully committed to interactivity and connectivity. Many of them offer online reservations and even the possibility of hiring skis and buying your ski passes with special discounts. They have also improved the Wi-Fi connections in their facilities, and enhanced their presence on social networks and in mobile apps.
You'll find more information on the web page of each resort on their new developments, special offers and the combined passes. You can also use our resort search engine to find more information on each one.
