The coast of northern Spain is a dream come true for surfers. Its extraordinary geographical situation means there are excellent waves all year round - powerful, large and varied. You will also find a huge variety of different locations, so that you can practise your favourite sport with a range of swells and wind conditions. All this, in an excellent atmosphere on quiet beaches, away from the crowds. There are even places where you will be all but alone in the water. These are just a few of the many reasons that assure you an unbeatable surfing session in Spain, on the shores of the Cantabrian Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.
Varied and jagged, the coast of Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country has a world of options to discover. Northern Spain has many ideal places to have fun with sea and board: small coves hidden between sheer cliffs, wild dunes and broad, sandy beaches in stunning natural surroundings, in the city itself or in smaller, quieter villages. A huge variety that guarantees you a diverse range of quality wave formations - frequent and suitable for all kinds of surfers: from enjoyable peak waves, perfect for beginners, to long, long waves of over 5 metres for memorable surfing sessions and tubes for the most daring surfers only. Whatever your level, you will find the perfect wave for you.
Throughout this area of the Spanish coastline you will find a range of opportunities to practise this exciting sport: all but mythical beaches, with world famous waves and a long surfing tradition, untouched by mass tourism… The range of beaches on offer is almost infinite, with spots such as Rodiles, 27 kilometres from Gijón; San Vicente de la Barquera, Suances, Liencres and Santa Marina, less than 60 km from Santander; Zarautz, 21 kilometres from San Sebastián; and close to Bilbao, some 37 kilometres away, Sopelana, Bakio and Mundaka, considered to have the best left-hander in Europe and one of the best in the whole world. These are just a few examples of multitude of beaches on offer.
The north of Spain is also ideal if you enjoy surfing as a spectator sport. Some of the most important competitions on the international circuit are held here. Competitions such as the Ferrolterra Classic, held in the Galicia village of Pantín (29 kilometres from Ferrol), the Goanna Pro held on Tapia beach in Asturias (97 kilometres from Avilés), and the Billabong Pro, held in waters off Mundaka, mean you can see the world's best surfers in action.
All this adds up to an irresistible panorama, rounded off by an exceptional climate, delicious regional gastronomy and a wealth of historic-artistic heritage.
