Madrid

To the north of Madrid you will find the Sierra de Guadarrama, an area of mountains with some of the region's most spectacular landscapes. A good way to get to know the area is by visiting its viewpoints, most of which are natural, a few man-made. Take note of the idea and enjoy some unforgettable views.

Come and visit the viewpoints of the Sierra de Guadarrama, the mountains that form the frontier between the provinces of Madrid, Segovia and Ávila, in central Spain. Getting here couldn't be easier. It is just one hour by car from the city of Madrid, although you can also get here by train. This area is of great ecological value, ideal to visit at any time of year, offering a host of emblematic routes that attract thousands of walkers and tourists. There are also many different viewpoints in these mountains. They are natural balconies with privileged settings offering views over the countryside in all its immensity. They all have something special to offer and are well signed for easy access. Here we will offer various alternatives, although they are by no means the only ones.

Guadarrama, 360 degrees

The itinerary could begin at the Cerro del Hilo viewpoint, in Becerril de la Sierra. From here there are panoramic views over this whole range of mountains. With no more than a sweep of the eyes you can see different peaks, such as the "Bola del Mundo" to the north, the "Cabeza Mediana" to the south, or the "Cuerda de los Porrones" to the east.

Navacerrada, a privileged viewpoint

Just 5 kilometres away you will find Navacerrada, one of the best known villages in these mountains, thanks, amongst other things, to its ski resort. We would also recommend a visit to the Ermita de San Antonio viewpoint. From here, the view includes the peak of La Maliciosa and the Navacerrada Reservoir, a point of reference for angling enthusiasts. A stroll around the banks of this reservoir will give you stunning views of the dam, and of the Navacerrada depression as a whole.

Manzanares el Real , picture-postcard beautiful

After Navacerrada, some 15 kilometres away you will find the El Chaparral viewpoint, with stunning views over La Pedriza, an emblematic area of granite rock, a symbol of the Upper Manzanares River Basin, which has the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve designation. From here you can see Manzanares el Real in miniature down below as if it were a model town, along with the Samburiel Valley and the Cuerda Larga mountains.

On the way you can have a rest at any of the recreation areas, picnic areas/restaurants and springs you will come across. Don't forget that it's a good idea to take binoculars and a map of the area to get the most out of the landscape. In any case, these are just a few of the many alternatives awaiting you in the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains. The best thing is to head for one of the tourist offices, where they will help you plan your stay in this extensive area of countryside, which is packed with tracks and trails, springs, reservoirs, valleys, rivers and mountains, the ideal setting for open-air sports. Summing up, this is an excellent option, just a few kilometres from the big city.
