Stunning coves and beaches in a special part of the Costa Brava
Calonge is situated on the Costa Brava, and has two main areas: Calonge, inland, and Sant Antoni, by the sea. Outstanding in the town are its Medieval castle (12th-13th centuries), Sant Martí Church and Càlcul Street. It dates back to prehistoric times, as can be seen from the dolmens and menhirs in the area. The Roman village of Castel Barri is also important. It is one of the largest archaeological sites from the Roman period. Work began on the castle in the 8th century and it is one of the largest fortresses in the region. The castle, along with the Lloreta and Valentina Towers, are especially outstanding buildings. There are also many walks you can do around the town, while the good climate and coastal winds make water sports possible all year round at its beaches and hidden coves. Prawns are the town's most characteristic dish, and should be tried without fail.
