Introduction
When you visit Galicia, in northern Spain, if you head for the Rías Baixas (low estuaries) region, then the wine you will find is Albariño. The extraordinary qualities of this wine, its crisp, young character, make it well worthy of the international prestige it has acquired. The Rías Baixas Wine Route is an invitation to discover everything that surrounds Albariño wine: the wineries and vineyards where it is produced, the people that make this possible, and the way of life of the region. Not forgetting , of course, the unique combination it produces on the table with Galician gastronomy.

What are the wines like?
Albariño wine is characterised by its crisp, smooth flavour, the perfect accompaniment to fish and shellfish dishes, and seafood in general. It has a bright, yellow/straw colour, with hints of gold and green; its floral, fruity bouquet is fine and distinguished, impressive and delightful on the nose. The Albariña grape is the most popular within the Rías Baixas Designation of Origin. Nevertheless, there are other varieties worthy of mention such as Loureira Blanca, Treixadura, Caiño Blanco, Torrontés and Godello.
How to get there
The Rías Baixas Wine Route is situated in the southwest of the Region of Galicia, in the province of Pontevedra. Vigo and Santiago de Compostela international airports are both less than an hour's drive from the region, providing access by air. If you prefer to travel by rail, there are daily services from the Spanish capital, Madrid. Road communications are also excellent: from Madrid, you can get to Vigo (592 kilometres) and Pontevedra (614 kilometres) on the A-6 (Northwest motorway), linking with the A-52 (Rías Baixas motorway) in the province of Zamora; meanwhile, from Portugal, access to Galicia is on the AP-9 motorway.
