GR 13: Cañada Real de los Roncaleses
To the east of Navarra and from north to south, this GR runs along one of the ancient pasture cattle tracks that, from the summer pastures of the Roncal Pyrenees, guides the flocks to the banks of the Ebro to spend the winter on the steppes of Las Bárdenas.
The route constitutes a true nature classroom, marking out places of historic-architectural interest, such as the Monastery of La Oliva, Peña, Sangüesa, Castillo de Javier and the Monastery of Leire. Its countryside is extremely varied with all types of climatic conditions, given that it runs from the steppe area of Las Bárdenas Reales to farming areas and from these to the spurs of the Pyrenees to reach the heart of the mountain ridge.
This route is recommended for mid-June and September, when the cattle is being herded. From El Yugo, in Las Bárdenas, the herdsmen's route passes through Carcastillo, Peña, Sangüesa, Javier, Leire, Castillonuevo, Alto de las Coronas, Vidangoz. From El Paso, an offshoot continues to Fustiñana –towards Tauste– in the province of Zaragoza and the other from El Yugo continues through Tudela to Tarazona, where it joins the GR 90.
In Sangüesa it joins the GR 65 (Aragonese path), in Javier/Xabier it joins the GR 21 (Javierano Path) and in Peña it joins the GR 1.
