400th anniversary of the birth of Murillo

Through the project 'Murillo and Seville. 400 years since the birth of a painter', the Andalusian capital prepares to celebrate this event and to pay tribute to this famous 17th-century Baroque painter in style. Although there will be some prior events (the 'Velázquez and Murillo' exhibition at the Hospital de los Venerables) and the opening will take place in December 2017, all the events will actually be held in 2018 and early 2019.
Exhibitions Murillo is one of the most unique Spanish painters, so this cultural project aims to involve the entire city. The programme’s highlights include the temporary exhibitions on offer in museums or cultural spaces associated with Murillo’s works. For example, the Seville Museum of Fine Arts will be housing more works by the Baroque painter and will include a series of them associated with the reconstruction of the Capuchin Altarpiece. The Santa Clara Centre will present an exhibition on Murillo’s disciples and the Turina Centre will delve into his modernity.Tours and Casa Murillo So that visitors may be well informed about the public and private spaces associated with Murillo, tourist routes will be organised through places such as the Archbishop’s Palace, the Cathedral, the Hospital de la Caridad, the Hospital de los Venerables, Santa María la Blanca, Los Capuchinos (Fine Arts Museum), the Convent of San Francisco (wall of the City Hall), San Leandro and the Convent of San Clemente.It is also hoped that Casa Murillo (the current headquarters of the Andalusian Flamenco Institute) may be recovered for interpreting the works of this genius.Performing, musical and audiovisual arts Some of the events that may be organised include a musical tour of the churches and chapels associated with the painter, the presentation of a film series or the creation of a documentary.Going out Another way to involve visitors in this celebration will be organising dynamic activities such as 'Cooking in Murillo’s Seville', street theatre, a Baroque festival which recreates the atmosphere of 17th-century Seville, etc.Research This wide range of activities may be supplemented by other, more technical ones, such as publishing books or holding symposiums.
