Exhibition: Art by Clara Peeters
Madrid, Museo Nacional del Prado
Still life with flowers, a gold-plated silver goblet, almonds, nuts, sweets, bread rolls, wine and a pewter pitcher. Clara Peeters. Oil on board, 53 x 73 cm. 1611.
On 25 October the first exhibition to be centred on a female painter in the famous Prado Museum will arrive in Madrid. It will feature work by Clara Peeters, a Flemish artist specialised in still lifes and one of the few female artists active in Europe during the first half of the 17th century.
This collection, organised in partnership with the Koninklijk Museum voor Dchone Kunsten Antwerpen (Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp) brings together a selection of her best works from the approximately 30 that are preserved worldwide. In fact, four of these works belong to the Prado. Besides from giving visitors the chance to learn about the painter Clara Peeters, the exhibition will also focus on the situation of female artists in the early years of modern Europe.
