The church of Santa María in Vigo's old town is the city's most popular place of worship and is known as 'La Colegiata'. It is dedicated to the image of Cristo de la Victoria. It dates back originally to the Middle Ages, although it was demolished and rebuilt in the 19th century, and this is the construction visible today. The cornerstone was set in 1816, and the works were not completed until 1836. The church has three barrel vaulted naves. The side naves are narrow while the central nave is very wide. The naves are separated by twelve Doric columns
