Founded by King Alfonso VIII in the 12th century to attend to the pilgrims on the Road to Santiago de Compostela. It was looked after by the abbess of the Monastery of Huelgas. Initially Cistercian in style and thereafter altered at the wishes of Carlos I.Of particular note is the gate of Romans, in Plateresque style, through which the Law Faculty and the rectory of Burgos University can be accessed.Inside the church are interesting wooden doors with St. James motifs from the 16th century.Amongst these images there is a pilgrim that is nursing her child as she is walking along.
