It was built in the Gothic period. It is the headquarters of the Royal Academy of Letters and the Galería de Catalanes Ilustres.
The original Gothic structure is still preserved, although it has since been refurbished and enlarged, Most of the preserved part is a 15th-century reformation. At present, it houses the Royal Academy of Letters, and institution that promotes the learning of Catalan history and literature. It is also the headquarters of the Galería de Catalanes Ilustres, a permanent exhibition of portraits of famous Catalans.
