The La Siberia region of Extremadura - landscapes of mountains and water
Get ready to discover an amazing area of inland Spain. A place where the green of its mountains meets the deep blue of the reservoirs. These are the Extremadura Mountains, where the landscape is just one of the attractions.
The La Siberia area is in Extremadura, the region of Spain with most kilometres of freshwater coastline. It is situated in the northeast of the province of Badajoz and has good access and communications by road. This was not always the case, however, and this is how the area, which is neither inhospitable nor cold, got its unusual name. Would you like to know what's on offer in the La Siberia area of Extremadura? These are a few of the reasons to come and discover it:
Landscape. It has a stunning variety. Here you will find rugged mountains that alternate with large reservoirs. Here there are also luxuriant forests of holm oak, cork and pine; large areas of open countryside and agricultural crops; rivers with fertile plains; countryside abounding in rockrose, thyme and wild flowers. Spring and autumn, when temperatures are mild, are ideal times of year to enjoy all the beauty of this area.
Water. Its rivers, lakes and reservoirs are some of the main characteristics of the La Siberia area of Extremadura. Along with the neighbouring area of La Sirena, this region is the area of Spain with most kilometres of inland coast.
Sports and leisure activities. This area is ideal for sports and water-based activities. If you like fishing, then here you will find pike, barbel, black bass and other species in its many rivers, such as the Guadiana, the Cíjara, the Zújar and the Siruela. For fishing permits and licenses you should contact the Agriculture and Environment Department of the Regional Government of Extremadura. Other options are water sports available on its lakes and reservoirs: Cíjara, García Sola, Valdecaballeros and Puerto Peña are some of the places where you can have fun going on a boat trip, sailing, windsurfing or kayaking. If walking is more your thing, then there are signed, intermediate-level hiking routes throughout the region. The La Siberia Rural Development Centre is located in the village of Herrera del Duque, and offers a full range of information on these and other activities available in the area.
Fauna. The Cíjara Regional Hunting Reserve covers a large part of the region and has rich, varied fauna. It is home to deer, boar, roe deer and lynx, amongst other animals. From its bird watching observatory you can see species such as the golden eagle, black vulture, Egyptian vulture and black stork in flight. For more information and to plan your visit you can go to the Helechosa de los Montes Forest Centre, or get in touch with the Environment Department on tel. +34 924011000.
Art and Culture. La Siberia is more than just countryside: during your stay, be sure to visit the medieval castle of La Puebla de Alcocer, the Roman remains at Lacimurga, the stunning ancestral homes of Herrera del Duque, and the Gothic-Mudejar Church of Santa Catalina in Talarrubias.
Health and beauty. At the Valdefernando Spa Resort, in the village of Valdecaballeros, you can relax and enjoy one of its health-giving treatments whenever you like.
