Discover the work of Salvador Dalí, one of the great geniuses of the 20th century, in the land of his birth and the source of inspiration for many of his creations: the Costa Brava. Come to this area of Catalonia, in northeastern Spain, and explore the places where this master of Surrealism lived and worked. Unusual places where you can enjoy and get to know Dalí's unique universe.
This route is in the province of Girona, in northern Catalonia. Its long coastline inspired great artists such as Picasso, Klein and Marc Chagall, but it was surely Salvador Dalí who brought international fame to this corner of the Mediterranean. Its landscapes of pine groves, fishing villages, small coves between cliffs, and the wild, transparent sea were at the heart of many of their works. As soon as you see its villages and beautiful locations you will see that the memory of Dalí, the great international ambassador of the Costa Brava, is alive and well to this day.
The route could get underway in Figueres, the town where the brilliant artist was born and died, and where you will find the Dalí Theatre-Museum. The genius' great legacy is not to be missed, with its towers with egg-shaped tops and the huge dome beneath which lie the artist's remains. It is the world's largest surrealist object, and is home to more than 1,500 works, truly emblematic Dalí pieces such as The Spectre of Sex-appeal, Galatea of the spheres and Port Alguer. This huge venue was designed by Dalí down to the last detail, and sums up the artist's career. You will be captivated by its unique atmosphere where, besides paintings, there is jewellery made of gold and precious stones, optical montages, photographs, sculptures and holograms as you never would have imagined.
The next stop is just 36 kilometres away, in Cadaqués, one of the most picturesque villages on the Costa Brava. This is where you will find the Salvador Dalí House-Museum, in a place called Portlligat. This structure of small white fishermen's houses was the artist's main refuge, his workshop and his habitual residence. This is where he painted most of his great works. Enter this labyrinth of narrow corridors, dead ends, rooms decorated with the brilliant artist's personal objects and mementos, and windows that look out onto the bay of Portlligat. Dalí fell in love with this typically Mediterranean scene on account of its light and landscape. Don't forget to book the date and time of your visit in advance - admission is limited to small groups: this is an excellent way to discover the more private, intimate side of Dalí.
Back in inland Girona, you will find the Gala-Dalí Castle House-Museum, in Púbol, with its garden of surrealist elephants, the swimming pool surrounded by busts of composer Richard Wagner, and the crypt where Gala, the artist's muse, is buried. A mysterious, romantic atmosphere surrounds this medieval castle that was completely restored by Dalí. Discover the paintings and drawings that the artist gave to Gala as gifts, its patios and fountains, and explore the rooms designed by the artist himself: they are unusual rooms with a predominance of medieval and Baroque decoration, the perfect reflection of this universal figure's creative power.
This is Dalí's world: personal, surrealist, unique. A visit will leave you anything but indifferent - not to be missed. Summing up, this is a different way to discover the Costa Brava, a region of sunshine and culture, with spectacular places such as the Empúries Roman ruins. So now you know: Dalí awaits you… in Spain.
