A neighbourhood full of history

The streets have been home to numerous peoples, which give the neighbourhood its eclectic cultural mix.

The churches of San Cristóbal and San Bartolomé along with their respective underground reservoirs, greet the visitor on a walk through this wonderful neighbourhood in Granada. There are also many other underground reservoirs including that of San Luis and the one in Salvador square, which lies at the foot of Chapiz Hill as well as the underground reservoirs of Tomasas and Rey, which is the largest in all of Granada. Albayzín city wall dates back to the Nazarite era. It was erected in the second half of the 14th century as a means of defence against the neighbourhoods that lay on San Cristóbal hill- Albaicín and AlbaydaIba. It stretches from Guadix gateway, which is actually the end point of Tristes walkway, and passes through San Miguel Alto, Fajalauza gateway, San Lorenzo postern right up to Elvira gateway. Fajalauza gateway also known as Almendros gateway linked Albaicín with Alfareros . This walk also takes us past Morisca de Yanguas House and Salvador church, which is Mudejar in style and built in the 16th century over the ancient Albaicín Mosque. Bibalbonud Tower and underground reservoir, San Nicolás viewpoint and Hizna Román gateway round off this little tour.
