This is one of the two provinces which make up the Canary Islands, and encompasses the islands of Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. Its capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is joint capital of the region together with the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
It is home to some outstanding natural landscapes, and its year-round sunshine and mild temperatures mean its beaches can be enjoyed all year long. The numerous microclimates in the interior give rise to an enormous variety of natural resources, which has led to the three islands in the province being designated a Biosphere Reserve by the UNESCO. The Timanfaya National Park is also on the island of Lanzarote. Lanzarote is an important cultural destination thanks to the presence of numerous artistic elements in homage to the artist and architect César Manrique, who was born on the island. The whole province, and particularly the beaches of Fuerteventura, are very popular with lovers of water sports, and especially with surfers and scuba-divers.
