Crafts getaways

Castile-La Mancha

Roll up your sleeves and get ready to go to Castile-La Mancha to take part in workshops on pottery, yarns and fabrics, wood, metals, stone, marble, fur, leather and glass. There are a multitude of workshops in this part of inland Spain that are waiting to welcome you. Many of these places are family-run, so once you get there you'll feel completely at home. For example, would you like to see how pottery is placed in the kiln and then painted? Would you like to decorate some tiny figures yourself? And then take home a souvenir? We can assure you that watching a genuine craftsman or woman at work in Castile-La Mancha is a fascinating experience.

La Rioja

What kind of crafts workshops are you likely to find in La Rioja ? The traditional crocheted lace, pottery, wood, 'frontón' balls, almazuelas (small pieces of cloth which mix colours and textures to create a range of surfaces), silk painting… Taking part in any of these workshops is an absorbing and interesting experience. For example, you'll find it fascinating to see how wool is worked, and you'll be able to take part in the process of weaving on a loom. And when you go home with a heraldic crest? Many of the workshops also offer courses, and have an exhibition area and a shop.

Practical tips

  • On the Castile-La Mancha tourism webpage you'll find a PDF in Spanish and English containing information on all these 'Crafts excursions'. Find out how to reach each venue, the time of the visits, how long they last, what languages are available, rates, minimum number of visitors required, and whether the site is accessible and has a car park.

  • For visits to the workshops in La Rioja it is advisable to call in advance. Many of these workshops are available only in Spanish, and last approximately half an hour, although this depends on each activity and workshop.
