April brings us the Pancaritat in Mallorca, a festivity that congregates more than 20,000 each year. Also in April all the Balearics will be transformed for the celebration of Easter processions, along the streets of diverse locations in the islands. Les Valentes Dones - Sóller - Mallorca The town of Sóller celebrates its most popular festival in May. This is the Fires i Festes de Maig, many days of festivities during which the role of the Valentes dones (Brave women) is recalled. The festival is celebrated from the 30th April to 9th May. A good idea is to use the Sóller train, a wooden train which takes you through some beautiful scenery. First Sunday of May Festivities - Santa Eulària des Riu - Ibiza Traditionally on the first Sunday of May a popular festivity is celebrated in the municipality of Santa Eulària, which stands out because of its majesty. The origin of the festivity is to be found in the legend that speaks of a moment when after a mass held on the promontory of the Old Church, when the faithful had already left the church, the temple sunk into the ground, with all the parishioners saving their lives. This event was interpreted as a miracle by the town's people, who since then have commemorated the first Sunday of May, date of the event. Activities are diverse, with the original parade of floats festooned for the occasion standing out. Easter processions - Illes Balears The diverse brotherhoods ' brotherhoods of believers ' start off the processions along the streets of diverse locations in the islands, recreating the last days of Christ. Easter Week is a religious celebration that commemorates the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, apart from representing a festivity of a most popular nature with deep-rooted processions dating from medieval times. The events start on 'Palm Sunday', which is the day that celebrates Jesus' arrival in Jerusalem. Then, from Monday to Friday a series of processions continue, amongst which those taking place in the city of Palma are to be highlighted: 'Brotherhood of the Blood of Christ' on Maundy Thursday and the 'Holy Burial' on Good Friday. The 'Descent from the Cross' that takes place in Felanitx, Pollença, Artà and Sineu are also highly recommendable. The week of celebrations comes to a closing on Easter Sunday when the Procession of the 'Meeting' is celebrated, which shows us a resuscitated Jesus who comes to the reunion with his mother. The Feast of Corpus Christi in Pollença - Pollença - Mallorca There is an ancient tradition associated to the Feast of Corpus Christi of which only the town of Pollença can boast: Ball de les Àguiles (Dance of the Eagles) and the ritual dance known as Sant Joan Pelós (Hairy St. John). Corpus Christi, celebrated sixty days after Easter Sunday, is a colourful, traditional holiday in Pollença. Pancaritat - Festa de l'Àngel - Palma - Mallorca March - April On the Sunday following Easter, many places in Majorca celebrate the Pancaritat (Festa de l'Àngel in Palma), a romería or pilgrimage excursion, the origins of which date back to the year 1407. The most significant of these takes place at Bellver Castle in Palma, where each year more than 20,000 people congregate in an atmosphere of festivity and fraternity. Medieval Ibiza commemorates its declaration as a Mankind Heritage Site - IBIZA The second weekend of May, the ancient walled city welcomes the Ibiza Medieval Fair, a showcase for craft markets, magicians, puppets, clowns, minstrels and jugglers who fill the city with colour and atmosphere. Medieval Ibiza, which commemorates the city's declaration as a Mankind Heritage Site in 1999, will be transforming Ibiza's old quarter, known as Dalt Vila, into a market with more than 100 stalls, a range of artisan trades demonstrated in person, hundreds of artists performing in the streets, theatres, exhibitions and much, much more.
