Since last January, the endless number of experiences Made in Asturias has been closer than ever: Did you know that the first pilgrimage route to Santiago was promoted by Asturian King Alfonso II El Casto, from his court in Oviedo? It's as the medieval saying goes: "He who goes to Santiago but not to Salvador (in reference to the cathedral in Oviedo), visits the servant, but not his Master". Did you know that Asturias is one of the few areas in Europe where brown bears can still be found? It's possible to follow their tracks, visit their habitat and even observe them in the wild in Fuentes del Narcea, Teverga and Somiedo. Did you know that there are ichnites (fossilised footprints) on its coasts that have been recognised by UNESCO? The cliffs of Tereñes (Ribadesella) and Griega Beach (Colunga) are two of the best examples. Did you know that Asturias is considered to be the birthplace of modern Spain? And that's not all. During its era of greatest splendour, a unique art was developed here that served as a precursor to Romanesque art. Referred to as Asturian Art or Pre-Romanesque Art, it is so special that is has been added to the World Heritage list. Oviedo and its surrounding area conserve the most emblematic jewels of what was the Kingdom of Asturias. Did you know that cider is poured in a special way here? Asturias is the only region that has preserved and handed down the technique of cider pouring. It's a mandatory ritual that brings out all the properties of the cider. But above all, Asturias is a required visit for all who love hiking, birds and nature. Its six Biosphere Reserves and the fact that a full one-third of the territory is under special protection make the region worthy of the slogan: "Asturias, natural paradise".
